Creamware Pro One

Available from 11/30/1999 until 11/30/1999
This one-to-one reproduction of the analog cult synth is the first fruit of an ongoing cooperation between CreamWare and former Sequential Circuits™ developers. All features of the original have been painstakingly recreated, including the audio input for processing of external signals, the step sequencer and the arpeggiator.
Powerful, punchy bass and lead sounds as well as tripped-out effects are the hallmark of the Pro One. Its reincarnation in the form of a polyphonic software plug-in adds impressive pads and layering to the repertoire. This is something you just have to hear! Extended information
The Pro One plug-in is the result of a joint effort between CreamWare and former Sequential Circuits™ developers - in particular, John Bowen, who played a crucial role in the creation of the original.
Using CreamWare's Circuit Modelling process, all hardware elements having an influence on the sound were modelled individually in full detail. The characteristic Pro One sound is absolutely true to the original and free of aliasing effects. The resonance and distortion characterstics of the original filter are fully available for use, and even filter FM (frequency modulation) is possible, thanks to the high quality of the algorithms employed. The analog nature of the original sound is thus fully retained.
The passion for detail is further evident in the user interface. The control elements were specially adapted in order to reproduce the characteristics of the original ones. If you happen to still be in possession of Pro One patch sheets, you can transfer the settings directly from these sheets to the plug-in and save them (finally!) as presets.
The structure
The Pro One employs a classic synth architecture: its sound sources include two oscillators, each of which can generate multiple waveforms - simultaneously! The oscillator signals are mixed with white noise and/or an external signal in the mixer section, which is followed by the 24dB low-pass filter and the amplifier.
Among the special attributes of the Pro One are its flexibile modulation options, the auto-repeat function for gating of internal and external sounds, and an envelope follower which permits the gating of sounds via external signals as well.
The filter and extra features
The filter section consists of a modulatable 24dB/octave low-pass filter with resonance extending to self-oscillation. Thanks to CreamWare's Circuit Modelling process, the filter possesses all of the "personality quirks" of the original and lends the typical Pro One character to the sound.
Although the main goal in developing the Pro One was to remain as true as possible to the original, a few extensions were nevertheless included: the envelopes include adjustable velocity sensitivity, the envelope follower's threshold is variable, and the use of MIDI clocking is possible. In addition, the Pro One was given an effects section including chorus/flanger and stereo delay.
Step sequencer and arpeggiator
The plug-in version of the Sequential CircuitsTM Pro One, just like the original, has a step sequencer and an arpeggiator. The step sequencer is simple but effective - and for just this reason, has a very high fun factor. Two sequences of up to 32 steps each can be programmed via MIDI. The sequences are looped in playback and can be transposed via MIDI quite easily.
Likewise, the arpeggiator was adapted one-to-one from that of the original Pro One. In conjunction with the step sequencer, it's a very practical tool for live performance and generates plenty of motion in the sounds of the Pro One.
As a consequence of the highly complex algorithms used in the Sequential Circuits™ Pro One, its polyphony is limited. As a rough guide: on a 3-DSP card you can expect to have 4 voices, on a 6-DSP card 8 voices, and on a 15-DSP card 16 voices.
