Wednesday June 11th, Eric Thoolen, co-founder of Gearjunkies and DJ2DJ passed away at the age of 46 as a result of a cardiac arrest.
Eric suffered from a muscular disease that he could control for a long time. Still, 5 weeks ago complications arose, and as Eric said himself, his disease was catching up with him.
We will remember Eric for his enthusiasm and dedication for all he did for the websites. Apart from taking responsibilities for the looks of the sites, he was also committed in his role as editor, where he set out a strict publishing policy and inspired the rest of the team.
For both DJ2DJ and Gearjunkies, Eric has played an essential role in making them more succesfull than we thought was possible. His passing away shall be felt, he will be missed by the team both as a professional but maybe even more as a friend.
Our thoughts are with Eric’s family now, especially his parents and brother, supporting them with the loss of their beloved son and brother.
For further correspondence please contact Marc van den Hurk, marc@gearjunkies.com
Danny Bedrosian has keyboards in the blood. Born into a family of piano teachers, he began lessons at three and a half years old and was classically trained from that point, until age 19. Along with playing lots of choir and gospel music in his pre-teens, he caught the jazz bug at age nine. “I always thought my talent could be applied to any music,” he states. “It’s about communicating and applying your energy to whatever music you’re playing.”
During Moogfest 2014, Moog Music facilitated a two-day workshop in which Moog engineers assisted 125 participants in building Werkstatt, an educational, patchable analog synthesizer designed specifically for the event. It was Moog’s first workshop since 1997 when Bob Moog held a theremin workshop in Portland, Maine. Led by Steve Dunnington, Moog Product Development Specialist, the Moogfest 2014 synth building workshop received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants and since then, Moog has fielded numerous requests to offer the Werkstatt analog synthesizer in a wider release. In an effort to bring this educational synth to more customers, Moog is releasing a no-soldering-required version of Werkstatt called, Werkstatt-Ø1 Moogfest 2014 Analog Synthesizer in extremely limited quantities at select US dealers only.

Below are some of the new releases we have encountered this week on the Loops and Samples front. Just like the quality of the audio software we use these days the quality of the content we use (loops and samples) equally matches the high standards of this software. Below is this weeks selection.
Moog Music announced the official release of the Theremini; a re-imagining of one of the oldest electronic musical instruments, and Bob Moog’s first love – the Theremin. It is the only known instrument that you play without touching. Moving your hands in the space around its antennas controls pitch and volume. The Theremini combines a powerful sound engine derived from Moog’s award winning synthesizer, Animoog, with the traditional no-touch playing of a Theremin.
Swedish music machine makers Elektron has just released a big OS update for the analog drum machine Analog Rytm. OS 1.01
Moog Music officially announced the release of its first instrument adapted for the visually impaired: the Sub Phatty with braille overlay. The Sub Phatty was chosen as the testing ground for the company’s first braille overlay efforts because of its tactile front panel and absence of menus.
Camel Audio have released their latest free expansion to the Alchemy Factory Library – 27 new presets, built from recordings of the traditional Ukrainian folk instrument, the Bandura.
Finally, a keyboard that unlocks the expressive potential of synthesis. The promise of synthesis was to produce any instrument sound from a MIDI keyboard. However, if you’ve ever tried to play a convincing guitar, sax, violin, clarinet or cello solo on a MIDI keyboard, you’ve found it to sound static and lifeless because keyboards can’t do much more than turn sounds on and off at different volumes. LinnStrument takes a new approach, capturing each finger’s subtle movements in three dimensions for simultaneous fine control of note expression, pitch and timbre. With this level of expressive control, the promise of synthesis is finally a reality.
Moog Music unveils one of its largest engineering undertakings, the new Emerson Moog Modular System. On the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the Moog Modular, the first voltage controlled synthesizer, Moog Music is proud to honor Keith Emerson and his seminal collaboration with Bob Moog. Today, for the first time at Moogfest 2014, Moog Music reveals its three year effort faithfully recreating the iconic Emerson Moog Modular.

Todays review victim is Kush Audio Pusher, as the company themselves say it’s an outwardly expanding distortion generator. “It’s a sound sculptor’s dream, an artist’s tool that bends the rules of physics to generate genuinely new musical distortions and transient colorations“, is what the Kush website states. Let’s see if we agree about this.
