GCI Technologies is now shipping the MS-USB, an all-inclusive portable sound system with a USB memory port and SD card slot, allowing direct playback of media files from thumb drives and memory cards. For added convenience, a stereo RCA input also lets you connect a CD player or iPod. Numark is famous, in the turntablist/scratch scene, for its CD players but also mixers. For Gearjunkies I had the pleasure to take ‘a closer look’ at the Numark NDX800, media player and midi controller. The NDX800 is a versatile media player as you can use oldskool CDs but also other formats via USB. It can even be used as a MIDI controller for Traktor LE, which comes with the NDX.

Renowned live performer Dub FX unlocks the creative potential of the new Loop Recorder in the Traktor 2 DJ software. A novel method of digital scratching is presented as an alternative to currently available digital hardware interfaces and time-coded vinyl (TCV). Similar to TCV, the proposed method leverages existing analog turntables as a physical interface to manipulate the playback of digital audio. To do so, however, an accelerometer/gyroscope–equipped smart phone is firmly attached to a modified record, placed on a turntable, and used to sense a performers movement, resulting in a wireless sensing-based scratching method.
