Tempera, the latest creation from the inventors of the Vector Synth, is a granular instrument like no other. With its unique user interface and four “granular emitters”, Tempera offers a novel approach to sound design and manipulation.
The interface features an 8×8 matrix of touch pads, with each column representing a sample. By swiping down with your finger, you can “scrub” through the sample, creating a range of different textures and timbres. If you prefer, you can also play Tempera via an external keyboard, which can be connected directly via USB.
At the top of the interface, you’ll find four “granular emitters”, each with an encoder and a display. These emitters allow you to manipulate the sound further, using parameters like grain size, density, jitter, and spray. You can also use various modulators such as LFOs and a reverb to shape the sound.
One of the most exciting features of Tempera is the ability to synchronize the emitters to the tempo and anchor them to a grid position. This means you can layer sounds on top of each other to create complex, evolving textures and rhythms.
Although we don’t yet know when Tempera will be released or how much it will cost, the video from Red Means Recording offers a tantalizing glimpse into the possibilities of this innovative instrument. If you’re a fan of granular synthesis and atmospheric soundscapes, Tempera is definitely worth keeping an eye on.
